Hey peeps!

A couple of you guessed right earlier today – I got my nose pierced!  What’s funny is that I don’t think most people would consider me the type to have a piercing anywhere other than my ears.  But alas, I have an affinity for nose piercings.  That is, as long as they’re the right kind, ie. very teeny tiny.

The night before we left Thailand after our year there, a bunch of my friends were getting tattoos, so I decided to get my nose pierced that night.  On our journey back home to the U.S., we had a 3 day layover in Tokyo, and because I couldn’t find a smaller stud to replace the monstrous one they pierced it with, I took it out.  I hadn’t seen my family in a year, and I didn’t want to freak them out right when I stepped off the plane:) lol.

So, now that I am not teaching anymore, I decided it would be the perfect time to get it done again!  I love it!

Anyway, lets get to eats for the day and then I have an exciting surprise!

I actually had a really weird eating day today.  I just didn’t really have much of an appetite.  A couple hours after my coffee this morning, I snacked on the tiny bit of leftovers from last night’s Tempeh Stir Fried Rice.

This was just as delicious as it was the first time around!

And then a few hours later I finally broke down and just made a peanut butter and grilled banana sandwich.  It seems that when my appetite is gone and nothing sounds good – peanut butter always saves the day!

For dinner tonight we decided to go out.  Don’t even ask why…we just felt like it!  How’s that for livin’ in the moment;)  Anyway, I picked up some Panera, and it was deeelicious!

So today I ordered two Operation Beautiful books (by one of my favorite bloggers, Caitlin) off Amazon – one for myself and one for my little cousin.  Then I went to the website of our local bookstore, which by the way I’ve been to twice since the book dropped, and found out that they had just gotten it in!  Obviously I had to buy a 3rd copy:)

fun and kind of crazy

Goood Mooorrrninng!

Whew!  This morning has been sort of crazy!  Jon and I rolled out of bed and booked it to the gym for a quick run on the treadmill.  We ended up having to cut it short because we were running late, so we knocked out 2 miles in 20 minutes.  Marathon training needs a serious boost after this past week :/

I was so excited once we got home and waited in anticipation for Caitlin on The Today Show.  Let me just say she was awesome and so inspiring!  Check out the video on her blog if you missed it.

After almost missing her segment (luckily I was taping it) for some crazy unknown reason that I still have yet to figure out (something goofy about our TV) and then finally getting to watch it, I jumped in the car to go get the husband some coffee.  I went from coffee shop to Jon’s office to Walmart to the other Walmart (you’d know the first one didn’t have what I needed) and back home in the next hour.  I was hunting for some white washcloths to use in my PiYo class tomorrow morning (eek!).  I bought some lavender aromatherapy oil to spray on them, and I’ll be giving one to each person to lay over their face during the final relaxation segment of class.  My current PiYo instructor does this, and I love it!  So, I thought it only right to carry it on:)

Anyway, with all the excitement I didn’t even think about breakfast, but opted to stop and pick up an iced soy half caf latte from Starbucks

This latte tasted exceptionally good today – not sure what they put in it, but I’ll take it!

Today isn’t going to get any less crazy anytime soon.  I’ve got a lot on my plate, especially now that I’ve spent the whole morning either in the car, in Walmart or watching The Today Show.  On the agenda – go through my PiYo class a couple more times and tweak some things, work on Outbox and do my homework for photo class!

I’ll leave you with a picture Jon snapped of me and the baby last night when we were practicing with the settings on our camera.  Remember when I said I did something kind of fun and crazy the other night, but I had to tell my mom first?

Thanks for the sweet and encouraging comments on this morning’s post.  You guys are so great:)

It’s funny how the blog community works – I am so freaking excited for Caitlin, and I’ve never even actually met her!  At least not yet.  I’m really looking forward to Healthy Living Summit for that reason…among many others.  It has been such a fun day of seeing so much support from everyone and all the Operation Beautiful posts that have gone up.  I’m loving it!  Don’t forget to tune into the Today Show tomorrow morning at 8:30am to see Caitlin talk about the book!

Today has been so crazy!  Sadly, Jon and I did not get outside for our run this morning.  We stayed up so late working last night and just couldn’t pull ourselves out of bed this morning.  It is for that very reason that I must make this quick!  So I can actually get some sleep tonight.

Even after we finally got up, I still felt like I was dragging so I whipped up an energizing green monster.

2 handfuls of spinach, 1.25 cups soy milk, 1/2 scoop Amazing Grass, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 banana, ice

After a couple of hours of writing, it was due time for a snack!

Ezekiel bread with homemade Classic Garlic Hummus

Today was my weekly lunch date with my sweet friend, Grace.  We met at Qdoba.  I ordered the vegetarian salad with black bean and corn salsa, grilled veggies, black beans, pico, verde salsa and guacamole.

I promise there is lettuce under there;)

It was just meh.  I have come to like Chipotle so much better than Qdoba.  It is good to change it up occasionally, though.

After lunch I worked on some Outbox tasks for awhile, and then it was time to get crackin’ on my photography class.  It actually started on Monday, but today was the first time I really studied for it.  Every week there is an online lesson and then a homework assignment.  My assignment isn’t due until Sunday night, but there is a live chat with the instructors tomorrow, so I wanted to make sure and be prepared for any questions I might come up with while shooting!  I’m so excited about this.  Today I learned about all the parts/settings of my camera, aperture and shutter speed.

I literally spent about 3 hours studying, taking one short snack break of course:)

Anyway, I wrapped it up and flew out the door just in time for yoga. It was a great class as always, but also the last chance for me to talk to my instructor before I teach on Friday morning.  I’m getting so nervous, y’all!  I’m definitely feeling more confident about it than I did this time last week, but it’s still so nerve wracking.  I can’t wait to accomplish this, though.  I’ve dreamed of being a fitness instructor for so long…and it’s finally happening:)

Dinner tonight was fun and easy!  We decided to copy a dish that we used to eat a lot in Thailand – stir fried rice.

Tempeh Stir Fried Rice

Ingredients

1 cup dry brown rice
1.75 cups water
1/4 cup chopped green onion
1/2 block tempeh
2 organic, free-range eggs
3 tbsp gluten free organic teriyaki sauce
2 tsp olive oil

Directions

1.  Bring water to a boil.  Add rice and lower to a simmer for about 10 minutes or until all water is absorbed.
2.  Meanwhile, add 2 tsp oil to wok or skillet.  Toss in green onion and tempeh and heat through.
3.  Add two eggs and continue to stir fry until eggs are cooked.
4.  Add rice and 3 tbsp teriyaki sauce and mix everything together well.

I served mine with a side of sauteed brussel sprouts, seasoned with garlic powder and ground red pepper

Delicious!  I loved this meal.  It really took me back to our days in SE Asia.  I’ll definitely be making this again.

Well, folks, I’m off to bed!  I’m already getting a late start.  Tomorrow is a big day – my last day to prepare for PiYo and my first photo class instructor chat.  Yay!

beauty in imperfection

As some of you may know this week is Change the Way You See, Not the Way You Look Week!  The purpose of this week is to promote Caitlin’s book, Operation Beautiful, as well as to help women everywhere see the beauty in themselves!

I decided to contribute a post because I have always struggled with loving myself and seeing past my imperfections.  From as early in my life as I can remember, I have focused on the negative aspects of not only my body, but also my personality.  I remember as far back as early middle school, placing a cut out of a girl from a magazine on the inside of our kitchen cabinets so that every time I opened the cabinet to get food, I’d be reminded of what I wanted my body to look like.  Not only did this not make me thinner or more toned, it contributed to the mindset that I would never be good enough until I looked as good as the photoshopped model in a magazine.

While I still struggle everyday with not accepting and loving my body, the one thing that has changed as of recent is the fact that I now recognize that it is not okay to constantly criticize myself.  The older I get, the more I understand that continuing to live this way is detracting from my health and happiness, and more importantly I don’t want my future children to grow up believing that it is okay. I put so much care into what I put in my body, but I am often reckless with the things I allow to invade my mind.

I’ve also begun to recognize the reasoning behind why I treat myself this way.  It comes down to one word: perfection.

We live in a world that is obsessed with perfection.  Everywhere we look we are bombarded with images of perfection – from magazines to movies to TV.  We can’t even stand in line at the grocery store or go to the dentist without having to face these kind of demons.

Headlines, advertisements and magazine covers constantly scream at us to improve this or perfect that while showing us an image of a perfect body.  A body we should have for ourselves.

What would your dream body look like?  Would it have any imperfections?  No.  This article is telling us that perfection is not only attainable, but that we should expect ourselves to achieve it.

If we just eat the right thing our stomach will be perfect and we’ll be happy.  Lies.

We must believe that we do NOT have to be perfect to be beautiful!

The path to perfection is a never ending black hole of self destruction because no matter how hard we try we will inevitably fall short. This is not to say that we shouldn’t strive for excellence in our lives – but we must be able to let go of the image of perfection that the world throws at us and that we come to expect of ourselves and begin to celebrate the things that make us imperfect.  That make us unique.  That make us beautiful.

Countless times (including this morning!) I have stood in front of my mirror and thought any one (or more) of the following:

  • look how fat my thighs are
  • my stomach looks awful
  • I wish my arms didn’t look so big
  • my hair looks terrible

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to stop tearing myself down, and begin the work of building myself up. But it won’t happen if we go about it passively.  We have to actively fight back.

But how?

Here are some ideas I’ve come up with to get started. I know you all have great ideas and suggestions, so please share them in the comments! Let’s do this together.

Actively being thankful.  If we spend our time and energy thinking of things about ourselves that we are thankful for, we won’t have as much time to think of everything we wish we could change.  We can foster positivity, gratefulness and love within ourselves.

Replacing lies with truths.  Each time a destructive thought pops into our minds, replace it with a truth.
Example – Lie: I wish my arms didn’t look so big.  Truth: My arms are beautiful and they enable me to do downward facing dogs and love on my husband.

Ridding our lives of false/evil messages of perfection.  Next time we’re in line at the grocery store, instead of zoning in on the magazine rack, call a friend or strike up a conversation with the person behind us by paying them a compliment.  We obviously can’t protect ourselves from these messages all the time, but every step is one step closer to loving ourselves.

Constantly remind ourselves of how beautiful we are.  In the spirit of Operation Beautiful, I put these up this morning.

Now as I’m getting ready in the morning, I can be reminded that I am beautiful now…and that I don’t need to change anything to be able to love myself.

I wish I had started out on this journey of loving and accepting myself years ago, and I’m so thankful for Caitlin and the Operation Beautiful movement for taking the first steps toward a revolution in the way we see ourselves.  Let’s work together to make our world a more positive place not just for ourselves, but for future generations of beautiful girls and women.

a crazy week: wrapping it up!

I want to start with a shout out to Caitlin from one of my very favorite blogs, Healthy Tipping Point.  I’m sure many of you are already avid readers, but if not you must stop by and check it out.  Today is a very exciting day in the blog world because Caitlin’s book Operation Beautiful hit bookstores across the country!!  Way to go Caitlin! Today has been only semi productive:(  Honestly, these last few days have been sort of tough.  I’ve just felt a little down in the dumps for no particular reason.  And it’s definitely affected my productivity levels.  I’m really hoping things start looking up soon!

Jon and I kicked off our morning with a fairly brutal 3 mile run.  We got started way too late, and therefore it was way too hot!  We actually ended up walking between miles 1.5 and 2.  But, fortunately we did finish strong so it wasn’t a complete disappointment.  Some days are just like that, ya know?

After our run I was so overheated and dehydrated!  I’m certain that my lack of hydration during our runs is responsible for how tough they’ve been.  Today my mouth felt like cotton and it was hard to swallow I was so thirsty.  It’s quite the conundrum, though, because I really don’t want to carry water for short runs.  Camelback or hydration belt – neither is very comfortable, but for long runs I make it work.  I guess I really don’t have another option though – I’m just going to have to start carrying water every run…at least until it cools down some. bah.

Needless to say after we got back I couldn’t even stomach the thought of a heavy breakfast, so I made up a little fruit plate

Which of course left me starving about an hour and a half later.  Enter mid-morning snack of homemade Classic Garlic hummus, baby carrots and a few Back to Nature crackers.

Tonight Jon and I met up for a late dinner with our friends, Jonathan and Grace.  We had such a great time catching up…aren’t friends just the best thing in the world??

We went to McAlister’s, a cute deli that we don’t really hit up that often.  I used to think they didn’t have very good vegetarian/vegan options, but I have come to know better!  Tonight I went with the veggie pita with honey mustard on the side. And a side of steamed veggies.

Okay – now on to finishing up the series of posts about this crazy last week.   If you missed it, here is part I, part II and part III.You would think after the chaos that had ensued since arriving at the lake, we would have high tailed it home.  But oh no.  We Marsh/McCoy/Fryar girls are not to be deterred when it comes to lake fun!

So after lazing around in the water for an hour or so, I decided I’d give wakeboarding a whirl.  I have been skiing since I was 6 years old, at which age they had to tie my skiis together because my little legs weren’t strong enough to hold them steady:)  I’ve wakeboarded a couple of times, but always struggled with it a lot more.

So, I dive in, get myself all fastened onto the board, wait for the rope to tighten up, and yell “GO!”

I don’t think at that point I really expected to get up.  It had been so long since I’d done it, I expected it to take me at least a few tries.  But no.

I popped right up on top of the water, wobbling like crazy and trying to maintain my balance while my mind attemtped to register what was happening.  Before I had even absorbed that I was in fact on top of the water, the front of the board dipped slightly, getting caught in the wake.  My body continued to propel forward, while my feet remained fastened in the boots of the wakeboard, causing me to violently slam into the water face first.

My first thought was that I was either A. going to die, B. have a concussion and/or C. black out.

Thankfully, none of the above happened.  But as I floated to the surface, waiting for the boat to return, I seriously could not feel my face.  The entire front side of my body felt as if it had been slammed into a concrete wall at a high rate of speed.  The wind was knocked out of me and every cavity of my body was filled with water.

All I could do was moan.

After several minutes, I began to regain feeling in my body and my mom and sister hauled me out of the water and into the boat.  No more extreme sports (as my husband calls it:) for Candice. We decided to call it a day and head back in.

Fifteen minutes of painful jolting later and we were back at the ramp to load up.  Of course only to discover that the boat trailer tire was completely flat.  Flat as a pancake.

We proceeded to spend the next hour and a half waiting, while some nice men helped us get it fixed.

I took the opportunity to get in some yoga.

And that was that.  After having the tire fixed, we said thank you to the nice men and made our way back to the cabin.  I packed up and headed back home, sad to be leaving such great time with my mom and sis, but exhausted after two full days of unexpected glitches.  And with a slight headache.

So, you can imagine my distress the next day when Olive ate an entire bar of dark chocolate and had to be rushed to the puppy emergency room.  I was this close to deciding to crawl back into bed and try again next week. lol.

Oh, yeah – and I did something kind of fun and crazy tonight…but I’ve gotta tell my mom before I spill it on the blog. lol.  I’ll tell ya about it soon:)

Hey everyone!

All day I have been thinking that today is Wednesday.  I’m not sure why…maybe it’s just wishful thinking:)

Have you heard of Operation Beautiful?  I just recently started reading Caitlin’s blog, and I think what she is doing is amazing!  So, today I decided to take part!

As you guys know, I’m a high school teacher.  So, I snuck in the bathroom this morning before school and left these.  I tried to stick them on the inside of the stall door, but they wouldn’t stick! ha!  So, the bottom one ended up on the toilet paper dispenser.  oops.  I’m hoping that won’t taint the message:)

This totally made my day, and I think I just might start making a habit of it!

Sorry for the short post tonight – I had to work on school projects for several hours, and the night has flown by.  I so missed surfin’ the blog world and visiting everyone, but there’s always tomorrow I guess!
